Rudy Nielsen

Who is Rudy Nielsen?

Education Rudy was licensed as a realtor from 1964 to 1984. He opened his first real estate office in 1972 and obtained his diploma in Urban Land Economics in Appraising from the University of British Columbia in 1972. He is a member of the Real Estate Institute of British Columbia, and a Fellow of the Real Estate Institute of Canada. He also has attended numerous seminars on appraising and marketing, both in Canada and the United States.

Appraising: Over the past 35 years, Rudy has been a fee appraiser for numerous companies including: Canada Safeway, Imperial Esso, Gulf Oil, Texaco, Standard Oil, Touche Ross, Royal Bank of Canada, Imperial Bank of Commerce, Bank of Nova Scotia, Montreal Trust, Toronto Dominion Bank, Tilden Rent-a-Car, Uniroyal Tires, Van Tel Credit Union, Roman Catholic Church, Can-Corporation, Imperial Pacific Resources, Imperial Life City of Prince George, Royal Trust, Pacific Rim Mortgages, and Seattle First Bank. His specialty is using maps, satellites, and air photos. He has appraised ranches, farms, islands, and both commercial and industrial properties, and in 1990, he valuated the 500,000 acre Douglas Lake Ranch for a client.

Timber: Rudy spent a number of years appraising and valuating timber for B.C. Forestry and has also completed timber valuation reports for clients throughout B.C.

Speeches: Rudy has shared his experiences in recreational real estate with the BBC, CBC Radio, CFUN and CKNW Radio in Vancouver, CKMX and CHQR Radio in Calgary, and 680 AM and CFRB Radio in Toronto.

He has been featured on Rogers Cable Television "Money Talks", City TV's "Realty Television", CBC News, and Report on Business Television. Rudy and NIHO Land & Cattle Company have been the subject of two hour-long episodes of the popular "Wings over Canada" program which aired across North America.

He is also recurring guest speaker and anchor at his friend Ozzie Jurock's "LandRush" seminars. The main topic of his speeches is how to find and valuate recreational land using the new technology in today's real estate environment. He regularly gives speeches for the Real Estate Institute of B.C. and he was a special guest speaker at the 1995 REIBC Senior Level Conference and Seminar.

Over the years, he has given numerous speeches to the real estate and appraising industries, investment clubs, credit unions, The Mortgage Investment Association of British Columbia and other local groups. Rudy has also held seminars on wilderness survival techniques.

Michael Geller is an architect, planner, real estate consultant and property developer with four decade’s experience in the public, private, and institutional sectors. He also serves on the Adjunct Faculty of SFU’s Centre for Sustainable Community Development.

His company, The Geller Group is active in real estate consulting and property development. Current activities include a variety of land use planning studies, rezonings and smaller scale infill developments, including apartments for people who don’t want to live in apartments.

He recently served as a juror for an international competition to design Moscow’s new International Financial Centre.

From January to September 2007, Michael completed an around-the-world journey while on Sabbatical from SFU, during which time he wrote a bi-weekly column in the Vancouver Sun.

From 1999 to 2006, he was President and CEO of the SFU Community Trust, overseeing the development of UniverCity, a sustainable community adjacent to the Simon Fraser University Burnaby Mountain campus.

Prior to joining SFU, Michael participated in the redevelopment of Steveston Village, Bayshore in Coal Harbour, Deering Island, Furry Creek and a variety of residential and mixed-use projects around Vancouver.

From 1981 to 1983, he was Vice-President Development, The Narod Group. Prior to joining Narod, he was an official with CMHC in Vancouver, Ottawa and Toronto during which time he participated in the Phase One redevelopment of the South Shore of False Creek.

Michael is a past president of the Urban Development Institute BC and UDI Canada; a former member of Vancouver’s Urban Design Panel, Development Permit Board Advisory Panel and the Board of Directors of the British Columbia Buildings Corporation.

He’s also a past Trustee of the Vancouver Art Gallery, Louis Brier Home and Hospital, and past President of the Jewish Community Centre.

Michael writes a weekly column in the Vancouver Courier and is a frequent contributor to The Vancouver Sun and other media.

He has been honoured as a Life Member of the Architectural Institute of BC and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Planners.

For the first time, this year we will have an experienced expert in the field of investment property insurance for properties in the United States, and more specifically, for Arizona.

Clark Sanchez is a 35 year insurance agent with State Farm Insurance, by far the largest property & casualty insurer in the U.S.A. Clark’s wife was born in Saskatoon, and Clark was the president of the Arizona Canadian Club until 2014. He and his staff work with Canadians daily to provide for their insurance needs.

Clark will speak briefly to the conference on insurance topics such as what liability limits are typical, features to look for in your landlord’s insurance policy, and recent trends in policy deductibles.
